* Worked out from live and historical prices, as a guide. The savings comparison is a flat 3.5% a year, and nothing here is a recommendation to buy anything.
How it works
How it calculates
Choose a quantity and a date and the price for that day is fetched. Quantity × the price then is what it would have cost you; quantity × today's price is what it would be worth. The difference is the gain, and dividing one by the other gives the multiple.
Compared against savings
It also shows what the same money would have grown to in a savings account over the same period. A return on its own is hard to size up, so there is a familiar yardstick next to it.
Frequently asked
How far back can I go?
Ten years, within the range where price data exists. Dates without data cannot be selected.
Does a past return say anything about future ones?
No. This is arithmetic on prices that already happened and carries no information about what comes next.
What savings rate does the comparison use?
A flat annual rate, compounded over the period. It is a rough yardstick rather than a quote from any particular bank.
