How the numbers are worked out

How it calculates

Your cost is quantity × average buy price. Your current value is quantity × current price. The gap between them is your profit before fees. Subtract the fees and what's left is what you'd actually keep. Your return is that figure divided by what you put in.

Where the fees land

Exchanges charge you on the way in and on the way out, so the fee applies to both your cost and your exit value — this calculator adds both sides. A position can show a gain on screen and still lose money once those two are paid, which is why the number here is usually lower than the one your exchange shows.

What break-even means

It's the price at which you've paid both fees and come out flat — not the price you bought at. It works out to average buy price × (1 + fee rate) ÷ (1 − fee rate). As long as there's a fee, that price sits above what you paid, and selling below it loses money even when the screen says you're up.

Frequently asked

What fee rate should I enter?

Add your exchange's buy and sell fees together. Most major exchanges land between 0.05% and 0.25% per side, but coupons and fee tiers change that, so the figure on your exchange's fee page is the one to use.

Why does it say I'm down when my exchange says I'm up?

Because fees are bigger than the price move. You pay on both the buy and the sell, so a small gain can be wiped out by the round trip. Above the break-even price you're genuinely ahead; below it you're not.

Are taxes included?

No — trading fees only. Tax depends on where you live and on rules that are still changing, so it isn't part of this calculation.

I bought in several times and don't know my average price.

Put your purchases into the average cost calculator and it will work out the average buy price for you. Bring that number back here.
