What the kimchi premium is
The gap it measures
Korean exchanges often price a coin differently from exchanges elsewhere. The premium is how far above the global price Korea sits, as a percentage. When Korea is cheaper the number goes negative, which the market calls a reverse premium.
How it calculates
(Korean price − global price × exchange rate) ÷ (global price × exchange rate) × 100. The Korean side comes from Upbit, the global side from Binance, both live.
Why the exchange rate is not the bank rate
It uses the won price of USDT rather than a bank quote. That is the rate at which won and dollars actually change hands inside crypto markets, and using a bank rate pulls the result away from what traders see.
Why the gap exists at all
Money does not move freely between Korean and offshore markets, so the two do not track each other perfectly. Demand inside Korea widens the gap; the reverse narrows it or turns it negative. This calculator reports the number as it stands and does not forecast it.
